Valhalla Touring is proud to announce the New Zealand Tour of southern sludge metal legends Eyehategod.
For over a quarter of a century, Eyehategod have carried the torch for the metal culture of New Orleans, sharing stages with the likes of Pantera, Goatwhore and Crowbar. And in two and a half decades, they’ve helped define the NOLA (New Orleans, Louisiana) sound: downtuned, blues-inflected guitars awash in furious distortion, underpinning the demonic screams of Mike Williams over a thundering rhythm section.
It’s impossible to describe New Orleans sludge outfit Eyehategod without using the term “legendary.” - Exclaim
But that 26 years hasn’t been without its troubles. The band went on hiatus in the late 90s as its members focused on other projects – Corrosion of Conformity, Crowbar and Soilent Green – before reconvening for Confederacy of Ruined Lives in 2000 - but everything got harder after that: Hurricane Katrina wrecked much of their hometown in 2005, and in the aftermath its membership fought through addiction, incarceration, probation and the death of founding drummer Joey LaCaze.
Eyehategod are sludge, and sludge is Eyehategod. There is no way around it. – Cvlt Nation
It’s been a long time between riffs, but Eyehategod emerged on the other side stronger and more determined than ever before. Their self-titled fifth album – the first in 14 years – is an exclamation mark on an already storied career, a statement of rebirth, catharsis, self-preservation and a sign of things to come. This November, Southern Discomfort makes its way to New Zealand.
This was a band built on a narrative about doing the opposite of what it thought people wanted: playing slow and messy music in a fast and virtuosic time, the 1980s speed-metal moment. Now, it’s hard to understand it any other way than an act of refined generosity. – New York Times
